There are many supplements that boost testosterone naturally, one of them is Boron.
Boron is a trace mineral found in food such as nuts and the environment. It is crucial to human health, for example it is important for:
It is actually quite hard to get enough of this super mineral, so many people tend to take it as a supplement; 10 mg supplemented daily appears to be best for your testosterone,
Avocados are great for boron but you would have to eat a whole one just to get 1.7 mg’s of it. So if you’re looking to get 10 mg’s everyday, you would need to consume avocado’s. Yikes! Avocadoes are a great source of testosterone boosting nutrients, but I think 5 of them a day would test even my love for them!
Boron is also found naturally in leafy green vegetables like kale and spinach and grains, prunes, raisins, non citrus fruits, and nuts.
The most common sources of boron in a person’s daily diet are:
- dried beans
Can Boron Increase Free Testosterone?
The effect of supplementation on free testosterone is pretty amazing.
Case Study 1
Males were given a daily boron supplement of 10 mg, 7 days. This resulted in a 28.3% increase in their free testosterone. Furthermore, their estrogen levels dropped by 39%.
Scientific Case Study 2
Vitamin D is also critical to testosterone, researchers wanted to understand the impact of Boron.
Participants were given 6 mg of boron per day for 60 days from calcium fructoborate.
After the 60 days, researchers found that:
- Vitamin D levels Increased 19.5%
- DHEA increased 56%
- Free Testosterone Increased 29.5%
Boron and Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG)
The interesting thing is that even though free testosterone increased significantly, which is vital if you want to gain muscle, lose fat and increase strength; total testosterone did not increase much.
Why is that? That is because of the impact of boron on SHBG in the blood.
Sex Hormone Binding Globulin is a protein made by your liver. It’s job is to bind to sex hormones ie testosterone and carry it throughout your body via your bloodstream.
This is a good thing as SHBG helps to keep your body regulated. However, as testosterone increases so does your SHBG levels.
Which means that even though your testosterone levels might be on the increase, this could be because SHBG is increasing and not free testosterone, which is what the body needs for things like strength and muscle building.
This is where boron steps in as it appears to reduce the amount of SHBG in your blood, thereby increasing the amount of free testosterone available to your body.
There does not seem to be an definitive guidance on how much Boron to take. However, in the best human study on boron and testosterone, the dosage used was 10 mgs per day.
Be aware that high doses of Boron are harmful
